Julia Hatmaker is an award-winning multimedia storyteller with an intense curiosity about the world and those who live in it.

Julia spent nearly a decade working for the Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper The Patriot-News and its website, PennLive.com. She crafts her stories using pens, cameras, microphones and more. More than a content creator, Julia is a leader in the newsroom and has several years of management experience. Before her time at PennLive, she graduated with First-Class Honours from Richmond, the American International University in London. She is now happy to be based in the United Kingdom again and is eager to start telling the stories of Greater Manchester.

“Today in Pa.” producer

Sept. 2019 – Jan. 2021

Created an award-winning podcast that acted as a daily news briefing devoted to the state of Pennsylvania.

Scripted, recorded and edited the podcast for more than 300 episodes.

“Today in Pa” had a 5 star rating on Apple Podcasts throughout Julia’s time hosting it. It earned a Gold ranking in “News and Politics Podcasts” from the 2020 W3 Awards.

Video Team Lead

Nov. 2015 – Sept. 2016

Pioneered production and distribution strategies for online video content for PennLive.com.

Managed team of videographers and worked with them to produced high quality video content. Together, she and her team generated video ideas, wrote engaging scripts, shot scenes, edited footage and created animations.

Formulated best practice reports and performance reviews by studying various analytical data, an important task as this marked PennLive’s first serious foray into video content.

Earned a first place award in enterprise reporting from the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors Awards in 2016 for work done alongside colleague Jan Murphy on her project on life in prisons. The same organization also awarded her a second place for Best Short Video in 2017.

Emerging Markets Team Lead

Developed and grew a Philadelphia-based audience for PennLive.com, which was based several hours away in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Created photo, video and text content that appealed to both Philadelphians and readership throughout the state.

Named one of the 25 rising stars of journalism under 35 by Editor and Publisher.

Earned a second place award in Feature Beat Reporting from the Keystone Press Awards in 2019. The Keystones recognize journalists throughout the state of Pennsylvania.

Managed a team of reporters and columnists, assigning and editing stories.

Generated story ideas and wrote entertainment, news and lifestyle articles on strict deadlines.

Used analytics to determine content and distribution strategies.
